Founded by singer Guy Sebastian and his wife Jules, The Sebastian Foundation replaces some of the benefit of family where it might be missing through under-privilege, serious illness or domestic violence. Here at Freedom Kitchens, we are proud to have worked together with The Sebastian Foundation since 2014, on several renovation projects including our recent project at The Hub, Lexington Place.
The Hub at Lexington Place, Maroubra, was opened by Randwick Council at the end of 2018. It provides free support to locals across a wide range of family services including health, housing, family support and childcare, and aims to empower its visitors by offering a calm and nurturing environment, designed to be secure, flexible and accessible.
The kitchen is a key part of The Hub – and together with The Sebastian Foundation, we’ve created a fresh, bright new space for the community.
The Project Brief
As a community space, the kitchen in The Hub needed to be bright and cheerful, and avoid looking basic. Space being limited, the challenge was to incorporate all the key elements without crowding, and make it feel welcoming and accessible – as well as being easy to keep clean.
The Design Solution
Freedom Kitchens designed a straight line kitchen layout, allowing for a free and open plan flow. The kitchenette includes a substantial pantry for its communal Foodbank, and an adjoining computer wifi workstation, where printing facilies are available for community use.
The cabinetry features an easy-clean gloss finish, using Freedom Kitchen’s Alaskan Gloss in the colour Soft Grey. The joinery also features a section of open shelving using Supa Oxford from Freedom Kitchen’s Luxe range, which matches the modern matte black bar handles, for a beautiful designer look. Simple but ever-stylish white subway tiles have been used for the splashback, with an easy clean and durable stone-look laminate benchtop, in the chic colour of Chalk Ceramic.
