Here at Freedom Kitchens, we do a lot of Shaker style kitchens – they’re a customer favourite. Classic white Shaker doors can create the coastal Hamptons look which has become so popular, but in keeping with the latest trends, darker kitchen designs are on the rise. Read on to see how our matt black Shaker cabinetry has brought modern appeal to a character-filled federation home.
Located in Sydney’s Inner West suburb of Glebe, this 19th century federation style home boasts beautiful features like a wood panelled ceiling and exposed sandstone brick walls. However, with these coveted classic features come some downsides – like a small footprint for the kitchen space, and a lack of storage.
The kitchen renovation goal was to maximise the space available with a modern layout, and update the look with some on-trend aesthetics whilst being respectful of the federation features.
Rather than using predictable neutral tones, the new kitchen presents a sleek and stylish darker palette, lending a modern edge that juxtaposes with the traditional. The Shaker profile of the Freedom Kitchens Sierra doors in Matt Black retains a sense of classic style, while the dark tone makes a striking statement against the white ceiling and sandstone walls.
The black kitchen cabinetry also ties in perfectly with other features in the surrounding space, like the black mantle in the dining area.
A tall cabinet has also been installed next to the mantle, for additional storage that matches the kitchen.
A standout design element in the kitchen is the stunning tiled splashback.
Subway tiles are classic, but these are a unique copper tone, adding a luxurious metallic sheen as well as a warmth that connects with the sandstone elements.
The copper splashback also ties in with the three copper pendant lights suspended over the island bench.
The island has been worked into the design to address the brief for a modern kitchen layout, and incorporates a double sink and tap, bar seating, and a wine fridge at one end – perfect for entertaining.
The benchtop surface chosen is Frosty Carrina by Caesarstone®, with a thin 20mm edge to keep it looking sleek.
There’s more storage underneath the island, and our Antique Brown Bar Handles have been chosen for their practical and traditional feel.
For maximum storage space, a tall cabinet extends from floor to ceiling, incorporating six shelves to house all of their plates and other crockery.
On the opposite end of the kitchen, an elegant sandstone wall is adjacent to the sleek double door fridge, surrounded by the matt black cabinetry.
It’s a stylish and harmonious combination of both old and new – a concept which nicely sums up this black Shaker kitchen.
