Week Two and the Pressure is Building!
With the Redback’s confidence shaken after their shock loss in week one, and the Blue Tongues struggling to keep to budget this week, the pressure has been on for all contestants this week. With two very different styles to work to – simple Scandi versus eclectic vintage, Freedom Kitchens takes a look at how the Redbacks and Blue Tongues pulled their kitchen designs together.
Modern Scandi: Transforming Jess and Doug’s dated galley kitchen with canary yellow benchtops to an open plan, modern Scandinavian design was the task for this week’s Blue Tongue Captains, Jemma and Ben.
Working with Freedom Kitchens, the couple have taken the traditional Scandi base of white cabinetry and added super matt black feature overheads and hints of copper for a bold, modern edge. Expansive Caesarstone® benchtops in Frosty Carrina, with its marble-like vein, purposefully soften the monochrome colour scheme and provide plenty of eating and entertaining space.
Homeowner Jess particularly loves the connection the kitchen makes with the rest of the home, “The white subway tiled splashback links the front half of our house which is of the 1940s era, and the open plan design makes this a central part of home, giving us a fantastic connection to the lounge and garden.”
Modern Vintage: At the other end of the spectrum over at the Redback house, collector Kaye loves all things vintage! Josh and Jenna were briefed to come up with a unique design that would appeal to Kaye’s sense of nostalgia yet also satisfy her children’s desire for something more modern and fun.
First step was to bring colour and texture into the kitchen; combining Freedom Kitchens’ Fresh Spring Flair pastel blue cabinetry with a combination of textures including open timber shelving and soft grey benchtops in Caesarstone® London Grey. In keeping with the brief, Josh and Jenna chose a beautiful vintage style butler’s sink that open to the alfresco entertaining area, and storage solutions such the Le Mans corner system which ensures every inch of space is maximised.
Homeowner Kaye says the kitchen fits beautifully with family life and ties well to the rest of the home. “When you walk in the front door, you are drawn to the kitchen. I am definitely planning to have more friends over for dinner parties, and I love it that the kids can have their breakfast at the bench while I get the school lunches ready of a morning.”
The transformations don’t stop here. Tune in for another action-packed week of Reno Rumble as the remaining Contestants move on to Challenge #3.
