In this next installment of our Before & After series, we’re showcasing a Freedom Kitchen located in Ascot, QLD which has enjoyed a truly transformative experience. The Woodside family were working with a dark, poky kitchen stuck in the 80s – read on to see how they turned it into their dream kitchen!
The Problem
This home’s original kitchen was small and got very hot in the summer – it simply wasn’t functional for a modern family. It had an old servery which was never used, as it was very disconnected from the rest of the house, with the dining and living areas in separate spaces.
The laundry was also an old empty room, lacking workspace as well as storage.
The Design Brief
The Woodside’s brief to Freedom Kitchens was to make their new kitchen into a modern space that still had a beautiful traditional feel to tie into the original 1920s Queenslander home. They knew they wanted white cabinetry and a light, bright feel. An an over-sized island bench top with waterfall edges was an absolute must, as were double ovens and a butler’s pantry.
For their laundry, they had a specific checklist, including a hanging space for shirts, a place for baskets, a big sink, a tall cabinet for the ironing board and mops, and sufficient storage for towels and linens.
The Solution
The new kitchen by Freedom Kitchens has a completely different layout and transformed it into a modern, open plan design. As part of their renovation they have also opened up their second level above the kitchen to overlook the dining and living room, creating a grand feel with a lofty ceiling, and loads more light in the shared space.
The oversized island benchtop with waterfall edges has become the centrepiece of the space, and the Freedom Kitchens designer has included a convenient sink, an integrated rubbish bin and dishwasher, plus storage for plates and cutlery under the bench for maximum functionality.
For their cabinetry, the recommended door style is right on brief: Freedom Kitchens Sierra with its modern Shaker door profile. The classic White Matt tone of the cabinets caps off the perfect example of a modern Queenslander home, lightening up the new connected space.
Addressing the problem around pantry storage, the family now have an ample butler’s pantry at the end of their kitchen, perfectly located near their fridge, double ovens and work space.
The butler’s pantry includes a sink located under a window and an integrated dishwasher, as well as more cabinets and open shelving. It’s become the ideal space for food prep and cleaning, being hidden away from the main kitchen but still featuring natural light and fresh air from the window.

The old laundry was in equal need of a renovation, presenting as an uninviting space with no benchtop and a complete lack of storage.
The new laundry is barely recognizable: it’s bright, fresh, and ticks every box in the brief. The Freedom Kitchens designer has included a large stone benchtop for work space, a hanging rail for clothes when ironing, and storage for baskets as well as tall cabinets for the broom, mop and ironing board.
The Freedom Kitchens Sierra cabinets match the kitchen, as does the gold tapware, tying the style of the two rooms together cohesively.
