Which Kitchen Layout is perfect for you!
One of the first (and most important) steps in planning your new Freedom Kitchen is picking the perfect kitchen design layout. Selecting the most suitable floor plan will depend on a number of factors including space, workflow and appliances. A successful layout maximises the efficiency of the three key zones in the kitchen or ‘working triangle’ as it is commonly known: food prep, cooking and cleaning.
From U-shape, L-shape, and Galley, to a design that includes an island bench, below are the most popular and common kitchen layouts in Australian homes. If you’re looking for kitchen layout ideas then read on- we explore each one in detail to help you discover your perfect design.
U Shaped Kitchen Layout
A popular choice in Australian households, the U shaped kitchen layout is ideal for those who love to cook and entertain, and want plenty of counter space. Suitable for both small and large spaces, a U-shaped kitchen design features three walls with built-in cabinetry, appliances and benchtops, that are all joined to resemble a ‘U’ shape.
This kitchen configuration allows for appliances to be placed within easy reach of each other, and provides ample storage and organisational space with a mixture of drawers and cupboards. You may also like to consider adding a dining zone within the centre of the design (if you have a large space), or a breakfast bench is another great option!
What a U-Shaped Kitchen is perfect for:
- Cooking and cleaning appliances are placed within easy reach of each other
- Space and storage are maximised by wall cabinets and built-in appliances
- Flexibility and efficiency of design
- Generous bench space creates plenty of space for food prep
- Multiple cooks can work within the kitchen
- Provides the option for a dining zone or island bench to be placed within the centre of the design.

L Shaped Kitchen Layout
Perfect for small to medium-sized kitchens, a L shaped kitchen design is a great way to maximise space. It provides plenty of counter space and is perfect for those who love to entertain guests.
Consisting of two main sides meeting at a right angle with an open space in the middle, an L-shape kitchen is an incredibly efficient layout, perfect for open plan living.
It’s flexible design allows you to place the cooking, cleaning and prep zones how you wish, while keeping them within easy reach of each other. You can also include a kitchen island bench within this layout, which adds additional prep area and storage space, as well as seating.
What an L-Shaped Kitchen is perfect for:
- Ideal for medium to large family homes
- Provides an efficient layout where your cooking, cleaning and prep zones are all within easy reach of each other
- It’s perfect for open plan living, connecting your kitchen to other key areas of your home such as living and dining spaces
- Allows for the addition of an island bench which provides more prep and storage space.
