When homeowner Ben purchased a charming apartment within an Art Deco building located in Potts Point in Sydney, he had a clear vision for transforming the kitchen into a multifunctional entertainers delight. He enlisted the help of Freedom Kitchens to bring this vision to life, and the end result is an uber chic and modern kitchen brimming with storage and even a hidden laundry!
Step inside and discover more about this amazing space- there’s more than meets the eye!
The Brief.
Set within a charming 1930s Art Deco apartment, the original kitchen was small and lacked storage. “I knew exactly what I wanted to achieve with my new kitchen, explains Ben. “I wanted to make the space for the kitchen larger to create the perfect entertaining space. I also wanted to take risks with the colour scheme with black and concrete tones.”
Before.
The existing kitchen featured a simple L-shaped design which allowed room for a small dining set. However this design didn’t maximise the space or storage, nor did it allow for much entertaining.
After.
Modern Colour Palette.
Ben knew that he wanted his new Freedom Kitchen to be modern with an industrial edge, and showcase a colour scheme that reflected this. Focusing on black, concrete and brass tones, joinery in Alaskan Black Ultramatt and Luxe Beton Texture have been paired with grey marble-look benchtops and hand-cut grey subway tiles for the splashback.
Pops of metallics, seen in the selection of the brass-look tap and our Brushed Brass Anodised Aluminium 40mm handles, add the perfect amount of luxury. Placed within the matte black cabinetry next to the fridge, an oven and microwave complement the black glass cooktop to their left and are keeping with the other black elements.
The look has been kept sleek and streamlined with the Luxe Beton cupboards featuring a mixture of Touch Catch and Volpato handles. Both the fridge and dishwasher have been integrated, and a pull-out rangehood selected to further reinforce the design’s clean lines.
Storage Galore!
One ‘must have’ the previous kitchen lacked was storage. Increasing the size of the kitchen by expanding its footprint to take up some of the lounge room next door, the galley-style design is now 4.6 metres long and jam-packed with storage thanks to a clever mixture of cupboards, drawers and a tall pantry to ensure that there is room to organise everything from crockery, glassware, cookware, and pantry items.
The Island Bench.
Not only is it one of the showpieces of the new kitchen, the island bench allows for additional storage and prep area. Measuring 2100mm x 720mm, it provides an extra four drawers and two cupboards, perfect for storing cutlery, utensils and other kitchen essentials.
The island bench also doubles as a dining table. The right side features a stunning waterfall edge, while on the left, an overhang creates room for seating. “My favourite part of the kitchen is the island. I use it for everything, smiles Ben. It’s been a great spot to do my work, and it replaces the need for a dining table.”
European-style Laundry.
Just when you thought this small but mighty space didn’t have any surprises left, let us show you the hidden laundry! Located on the kitchen’s left-hand side, large Square Hook Matt Black 900mm handles open up tall Alaskan Black Ultra Matt double doors to reveal a washing machine and additional shelving. The inclusion of the laundry ensures that this kitchen is a truly multifunctional space that works hard while looking great!
Light the way!
A thoughtful lighting scheme brings the whole kitchen together. A large window on one side of the room allows for plenty of natural light, allowing the many beautiful features of the space to shine. LED strip lighting below the wall cupboards adds ambience, while a sculptural pendant over the island bench adds to the modern look. A flat ceiling light has also been included to light up the entire kitchen when necessary.
The End Result.
The final space ticks all the boxes for Ben. Featuring a sophisticated and modern colour palette, loads of storage and plenty of showpiece features, the kitchen is a multi-functional space that has transformed the entire home. “I found Freedom Kitchens very easy to work with. “Everyone from my designer, joiner and customer service were very helpful despite being busy, says Ben. “I would recommend Freedom Kitchens to others without hesitation.”
