Creating a Unique Kitchen on a Budget

Interiors Addict TV chats to Reno Rumble contestants, Josh & Jenna, about their controversial ‘blue’ modern vintage kitchen. Discover their secrets to designing a unique kitchen on a budget.

Then read on to learn about what the homeowner’s really think about their new kitchens!

KAYE, MODERN VINTAGE: In a space that Kaye herself described as tired and shabby before the makeover, the main concern that needed addressing was function, as well as updating just about everything in the kitchen and opening the space up.

What Kaye thought of the transformation…

“The kitchen fits beautifully with the rest of the home,” she says. “When you walk in the front door, you are drawn to the kitchen at the rear of the home. So much natural light and the bi-fold servery windows connect this space directly to the alfresco entertaining area”.

On the styling choices Josh and Jenna went with…

“The kitchen is so fresh and unique. We now have beautiful duck-egg blue cabinetry with leather strap handles on the cupboards. Natural timber shelving and white subway tiles give it a relaxed feel, and the lovely Caesarstone benchtop is a soft grey”.

How the new kitchen has improved her life…

“Now that we have a practical space to cook in, I am planning to have more friends over for dinner parties. The kids like having their breakfast at the bench while I get the school lunches ready of a morning”.

JESS & DOUG, MODERN SCANDI: Sporting canary yellow benchtops before the transformation, the space also required a lot more storage for owner’s Jess and Doug, along with a whole new orientation, so that they weren’t shut off from the rest of the family when they cooked.

On the colour scheme and styling of their new kitchen…

“The colour scheme is simple and suits the modern Scandi look we love,” say Jess and Doug. “The white subway tile splashback links the front half of our house, which is of the 1940s era. The kitchen has been opened up, giving us a fantastic connection to the lounge and garden. The black sink and tap working in perfectly with the colour scheme”.

On the finishes Ben and Jemma chose…

“The cabinets all have a matt finish, with the black and white cabinetry providing great contrast. The Caesarstone benchtops have a slight pattern running through it, a bit of a marble effect, and the colours tie in beautifully”.

How the new kitchen has changed their lives…

“With the storage drawers we now have a place for everything, and it’s easy to find and get to. The kitchen is now a beautiful space to be in, and the heart of the home”.
