Homeowner Alan entrusted Freedom Kitchens to transform the kitchen and laundry in his Californian bungalow style home in Highett, Melbourne. A fresh two-toned colour palette of doors in Iceland Peak White Satin and Newbury Fox Flint creates a modern space that brings everyone together and effortlessly connects with the outdoors via bi-fold windows and doors.
Read on to find out more about this latest, stunning Freedom Kitchens transformation.
The kitchen.
Before. Located at the rear of the house within the living area, the kitchen and laundry were both small spaces, lacking storage and functionality. They also weren’t immediately connected to each other or to the outdoor space where the couple love to entertain.
“The original kitchen was 20 years old, tired and cramped,” Alan explains. “We wanted to create a stronger connection to our outdoor decking area while designing a fresh, modern space that matched the home and its exterior.”
The solution.
First on the list was to move the kitchen to the other side of the rear living space, allowing for a much larger kitchen footprint, a European laundry and a proper dining area. Bi-fold windows, which acts as a servery zone, now directly connects the kitchen to the outdoors.
The design. A modern, light-filled kitchen was the order of the day. “We specifically wanted no handles, a clean, modern look and abundance of cupboard space that extended to the 3-metre ceiling” states Alan.
The U-shaped design is jam-packed with storage, appliances, accessories and prep area. A mixture of drawers and to-the-ceiling cabinets (many with concealed drawers within) ensures that storage and organisation is a breeze. Calcutta Stone benchtops, sourced by the homeowners, offer plenty of prep area, with the waterfall edge at the end creating a seating area for two with a wine fridge, leading out to the bi-fold doors to the patio.
The style.
Iceland Peak White Satin and Newbury Fox Flint cabinetry have been paired together, evoking a fresh and contemporary look. Iceland White Satin doors have been used along the lower runs of cabinetry, with Freedom Kitchens integrated Peak handles used for a sleek finish.
Newbury Fox, a stunning mid-grey door with Flint finish has been used along two walls, with Touch Catch cabinets running up to the 3-metre ceiling. “Our designer specifically suggested using two coloured cabinetry which we were unsure of, to begin with, but are very glad we went with it,” smiles Alan. “It also complements our California bungalow house exterior colours.”
The classic marble benchtop is a perfect choice with the grey and white doors. Caesarstone quartz tops in colours such as Empire White or Statuario Maximus are a beautiful Freedom Kitchens alternative to the Calcutta Stone countertop used in this space and can also be carried up the splashback for a strong effect. Irregular polished concrete-look tiles and simple LED lighting complete the look.
How to get the look with Freedom Kitchens.
The Laundry.
Located next to the kitchen, the stylish and compact European laundry mirrors the same two-tone colour palette of white and grey to create a seamless flow between the two rooms.
Just like the kitchen, the original laundry was cramped and lacked functionality. The main area hosts Iceland Peak White Satin doors, matching countertop and classic subway tiles, keeping the wet area light and bright, while visually connecting to the kitchen.2.3-metre tall bi-fold doors paired with touch-catch upper cabinetry in Newbury Fox Flint allow a sleek option for hiding away any mess behind closed doors.
The Freedom Kitchens Experience.
“We chose Freedom Kitchens because of the high-quality cabinetry and door closures, design options and flexibility,” says Alan. “We must also mention the outstanding job our installer Brian did who worked wonders in delivering an outstanding result.”
